18LIQUIDAIRTECHNOLOGIESAGUIDETOTHEPOTENTIALInaliquidaireconomyawiderangeofenergyneedscouldbeservicedfromasingletankofcold.4.THELIQUIDAIRECONOMYGrainspotentialliquidairproductioncapacity.AgainabusdepotwithsufcientspacecouldalsoinstallaCryogensettogeneraterevenuebyprovidingreservecapacitytothelocalgrid.NewliqueersatankofcoldMuchoftheintegrationdiscussedsofarcouldbeachievedbyexploitingtheexistingnitrogenglut.Oncethatisexhaustedtoexpandfurtherwewouldneedtobuildnewliquidairproductionplantsandthatwouldcreatetheopportunitytocreateafullyjoinedupsystem.Insteadofintegratingliquidairtechnologiessomewhatpiecemealwecouldstarttoplanavarietyofenergyservicesaroundastrategicallyplacedtankofcoldinlocationsasdiverseasindustrialparksbusdepotsandtowncentres.Aswindcapacitycontinuestoriseliquidairwouldallowlowercarbonovernightelectricitytobedeployedinpeakpowergenerationtransportrefrigerationandcoolingallfromasingleplant.Sowhatmightaliquidaireconomylooklikein2030AnewliqueerorLAESplantsitedatanindustrialparkforexamplemightsupplyarangeofneighbouringbusinessesfordifferentpurposes.AdatacentremightneedliquidairforcoolingandforitsbackupCryogensetwhilealogisticscompanymightwantfuelforitsZEVforklifttrucksandheathybridlorries.AbiomasspowerstationorgasredCHPplantcouldbeintegrateddirectlywiththeLAESunitoriftoodistantcouldinstallaCryogensetandtanktoberelledperiodicallybydeliveriesfromthecentralliqueer.Withsufcientregionaldemandforliquidairtheliqueercouldbesizedtosupportatankerdistributionnetwork.AsupermarketdistributionhubontheotherhandmightinstallalargeliquidairtanktoberegularlyrelledfromthenearestliqueerwhichcouldsupportitsDearmanenginetruckrefrigerationunitsforklifttrucksandaCryogensetforemergencypower.AmetropolitanbusdepotcouldadoptasimilarapproachwithalargetanktosupportbothitsheathybridbuseetandaCryogensetforgridbalancing.Inthelongertermitmightalsosupportrefuellingforprivatevehicles.Furtheraeldamineoperationcouldgainparticularbenetsfromorganisingitsoperationsaroundatankofcold.IfundergroundvehiclesweredesignedtorunonDearmanenginesasZEVstheirexhaustofcoldairwouldprovidemuchneededcoolingandreducetheloadonventilationsystems.Abovegroundheavydutyoff-highwayvehiclessuchasdumpertruckscouldbedesignedasheathybridstosavelargeamountsofdiesel.Theliquidaircouldalsoprovideback-upagainstpowercuts-particularlyvaluableincountrieswheretheelectricitygridisunreliablesuchasSouthAfricaandcoolingforminebuildings.Sincemineswouldneedlargevolumesofliquidairandareoftenremoteitislikelytheywouldinstalltheirownliqueertooperateoff-peak.Thepotentialofthenitrogenorliquidaireconomyisonlybeginningtobecomeapparentanditseemslikelythatfurtheropportunitieswillemergeasourunderstandingimproves.TheLiquidAirEnergyNetworkhasbeenformedtoinvestigatethepossibilitiesandwillpublishitsndingsinaseriesofreportsoverthecomingyear.ThesewillincludeLiquidAirontheHighwayLiquidAirMappingtheUKOpportunityandCleantechLeapfrogatankofcold.Formoreinformationpleasevisitwww.liquidair.org.uk
